Mike Ahern

Very sad to hear the news of the death of Mike Ahern. Mike was one of the most popular djs on Radio Caroline North in the sixties, and also one of the original djs on the launch of BBC Radio 1 in 1967.
He was last heard on Pirate BBC Essex from Harwich this year.
A nice guy. I interviewed him once for Record Mirror and then met him again in either my BBC or Luxembourg days. Really distinctive voice.
Very sad to learn of the death of Mike Ahern one of the great DJ`s on Radio Caroline North. I bet him and Daffy Don Allen are really rockin around heaven. R.I.P. both of you. ROB, LIVERPOOL, UK
Well, following on from my October 10 message, I had an e-mail the other day from one of my ex-BBC colleagues who told me we did indeed talk to Mike Ahern in the early 70s - but by phone. Apparently, one of the Radio 1 Executive Producers at the time was quite keen to get him onto the network, that would have been 1972 I think. Anyway, sadly, wasnt to be.
Ive only just learnt that Mike is no longer with us!!! What a sad loss, I remember him so well from the Caroline days, he was such a lively fun and totally professional jock who made radio come alive for me. I met him back in 1998 and secured a job for him at the then Cambridge Cafe Radio. I couldn;t believe that the guy I was so in awe of as a kid was working with me. Alas I got the sack soon after!!!! Great guy, in fact the quintessential 60’s pop DJ.
